What Is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy is a revolutionary procedure that takes away many of the burdens of surgery. If the word “surgery” makes you tense, you’re not alone. Many people fear that with an operation comes long downtimes, hospital stays, and noticeable scarring, but laparoscopy changes all that. At Lively Wellness and Aesthetics, we offer this premier surgical option for our valued patients in our state-of-the-art Odessa, TX facility.

What Is Laparoscopy?

Laparoscopy, or laparoscopic surgery, is a low-risk surgical procedure used to investigate the inside of the body. During the procedure, an instrument called a laparoscope-a long, thin tube with a light fixture and a high-resolution camera-is inserted into the body through a tiny incision. The camera projects captured images onto a video monitor for up-close examination of the body’s organs or tissues.

This examination procedure allows for Dr. Lively to view the causes of your discomfort in real-time without waiting for lengthy lab result wait times.

What Does Laparoscopy Treat?

Laparoscopic surgery is the preferred choice when invasive measures are necessary to diagnose or treat uterine abnormalities and unexplained pelvic pain. There are a variety of conditions that may contribute to symptoms of these conditions, and Dr. Lively will explicitly look for:

  • Endometriosis
  • Ovarian cysts
  • Fibroids
  • Infection (drug therapy-resistant)

What Are the Benefits of Laparoscopic Surgery?

Laparoscopic surgery is the premier option for many feminine health issues because of the benefits it provides. All the perks of this procedure revolve around the technique itself. Because it only requires very small incisions, you enjoy:

  • Smaller scars
  • Less discomfort
  • Shorter hospital stays
  • Faster healing
  • Less downtime

The Procedure

During a gynecological laparoscopic surgery, your body is positioned so that your head is slightly lower than your feet. We give you general anesthesia for a calming and comforting experience. Dr. Lively creates a tiny incision near your navel to place the laparoscope. Once inserted, we inflate the abdomen for more precise viewing.

If Dr. Lively needs to perform any minor surgery in the relevant region, he will create a second incision near the top bikini line. This second incision allows him to insert instruments to complete the procedure.

After the Procedure

On average, you must stay for one hour after the procedure for observation. We usually perform laparoscopic surgery on an outpatient basis, which means that you are free to return home after this short period of rest. Once Dr. Lively establishes that you are fit for discharge, we’ll provide you with all aftercare instructions.

Because we use general anesthesia for this procedure, you must arrange for someone to drive you home from your appointment. You cannot drive for 24 hours after surgery, and we recommend that you have someone stay with you during this time, when possible.

After your procedure, we’ll ask you to come in for a follow-up visit. Attending this appointment is an essential step for monitoring your recovery. We’ll book this appointment approximately two weeks or more after your surgery. If you have questions about your follow-up visit or need to reschedule, please contact us.

How Long Does It Take to Recover Laparoscopic Surgery?

Specific procedure times for laparoscopic surgery vary depending on your circumstances. Overall, the procedure is much shorter than traditional surgical methods. We’ll discuss your specific timeline with you when we meet before your appointment.

Preparation

Preparing for laparoscopic surgery is like preparing for any surgery. It’s imperative that you follow all pre-operative instructions carefully.

Before Surgery

Talk About Medication

Please discuss any medication that you are taking with Dr. Lively before your appointment. He may ask you to stop taking certain medicines for a time or provide you with specific instructions about how to take them before receiving laparoscopic surgery.

Ask for Support

Reach out to loved ones and friends before your surgery to arrange for their help. Besides driving you to and from your appointment, we advise that someone look after you for 24 hours following the procedure.

Stock Up

Buy drinks like ginger ale or lemon-lime soda, bland foods like toast, soup, broth, and crackers, and get some protein shakes to have after your surgery. These items will help keep you nourished and help you heal.

Night Before Surgery

Please do not eat or drink anything, including water, after midnight the night before your appointment. We also recommend that you not smoke during this time.

Day of Surgery

On the day of surgery, there are few general guidelines to follow to maximize your comfort and enhance your safety.

Clothing

Wear loose-fitting clothing. Keep in mind that you may experience some abdominal discomfort after surgery. Do not wear anything that will feel tight around your waist or hips.

Shoes

Wear flat shoes. Anesthesia can cause drowsiness and make you feel less steady than usual. We recommend that you wear flat shoes to your appointment to help you keep your balance.

Jewelry

Please do not wear any jewelry to your appointment. It’s better to keep your valuables at home while during your procedure.

Remove Nail Polish

Nail polish can prevent our surgical team from monitoring you during surgery. We place a device on your fingers that checks for adequate oxygen levels. Fingernail polish and acrylic nails can impair the device’s ability to give an accurate reading.
