Microneedling Sessions Your Way To Achieve A More Youthful Appearance

Even if you’ve done everything in your power to treat your skin well, from the inside out, it won’t be enough to entirely stave off the signs of aging. Fine lines, wrinkles, skin laxity and other imperfections can be distracting and limit the self-confidence we once had. If you’re ready to make a move towards looking and feeling better, call Lively Wellness & Aesthetics to discuss how microneedling sessions could help you achieve a more youthful appearance.

What Causes the Signs of Aging?

Each birthday tells us we’re getting older, but what exactly causes the physical signs of aging? That changing appearance is all because of a reduction in our body’s production of collagen. Collagen is the most prevalent protein in our bodies, making up or skin, ligaments and other connective tissues. It’s also responsible for the structure of our skin and keeping it smooth and taut.

Collagen works with elastin, which is responsible for our skin’s elasticity and ability to bounce back into place, and with hyaluronic acid, which helps our skin attract and hold on to moisture. When we turn 18, our collagen production peaks, and it’s thought we lose about 1% every year after. If we’ve spent a significant amount of time in the sun or have smoked cigarettes, our production is further depleted.

When collagen breaks down, the structure of our face loses firmness. When parts of our face lose their plumpness, our skin falls to fill in those voids, making wrinkles. Over time, we’ll see our texture and tone become uneven, our complexion become dull and acne scars look more pronounced. There is a treatment that can help us replace lost collagen—microneedling.

What Is Microneedling?

Microneedling is also referred to as collagen induction therapy because it forces our skin into its natural healing process, which triggers collagen production. Microneedling uses a small, handheld device that’s packed with hair-thin needles. During treatment, that device is gently passed over the skin’s surface several times, creating micro-channels. Microneedling process that triggers a cellular response from your body.

These micro-injuries result in your skin activating its healing process, causing cell turnover. As a result, your body ups its production of collagen and elastin. As the regeneration process happens, capillaries are formed and blood flow is increased to the treatment area, restoring your complexion to a more vibrant and youthful version of itself.

Unlike treatments that use heat, this treatment is safe for all skin types and tones. It’s particularly helpful for patients with thin and sensitive skin because the collagen helps to bring structure and thickness to the area.

What to Expect

After you and your provider have decided this is the best treatment for your areas of concern, there won’t be much prep since this is non-ablative and non-surgical. You’ll be asked to stop taking blood-thinning supplements and over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen for about a week before your appointment just to minimize potential bruising.

On the day of your session, a skin numbing ointment will be placed on your skin to maximize and maintain your comfort during treatment. The handheld device will be gently guided over your skin with a concentration on problem areas like scarring and hyperpigmentation. When treatment is over, your skincare specialist may recommend specific products for you. This is the right time to use skincare products, as the micro-channels allow your skin to better absorb the benefits.

Many clients see results right away, but results will keep getting better as your skin regenerates and new collagen goes to work filling in lines and smoothing out imperfections.

Results

Many clients are happy with their results after one session, and the results can last up to six weeks. Clients who don’t want an interruption in results should follow their provider’s recommendation for a maintenance schedule. The more treatments you have, the more constant your production of collagen will be and the better your results will look.

This treatment is very effective in minimizing the appearance of acne scars or “pits”. An acne scar is made when a cyst forms in the deeper layers of the skin and resolves itself. What’s left is an empty gap between the bottom and top layers of the skin, resulting in a concave scar. As collagen builds up, it fills in those scars leaving skin smoother looking and feeling.

This treatment is becoming one of the most popular for a reason—it’s effective on an array of skin concerns, and not just on the face. People who aren’t happy with the look of stretch marks or acne scarring on other parts of the body can ask their provider about using this treatment to get results on places like the legs, chest, and buttocks. This treatment addresses an array of concerns like:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Minor skin laxity
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Sun damage and brown spots
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Dull complexion
  • Uneven skin texture
  • Acne scars
  • Stretch marks
